Day 187 – 14th May – Las Vegas – New Orleans
Not a lot to report today. We had a late check out arranged for 3pm and stayed in and around the hotel until we got an Uber to the airport at 5:30pm ready for our flight to New Orleans at 8pm. Our flight was 3 hours and with the time difference and slight delay we arrived into New Orleans at 1:30am.
Day 188 – 15th May – New Orleans
We got up late morning and went for a walk into New Orleans. It was a hot day and so we went to watch the end of the Leeds match and get a drink. Well enough said about that the better! After the disappointment of the result we went for a walk around the French Quarter which was really pretty and went to a tour company to book something for the next day. Later on we went around Bourbon Street and had a couple of drinks there. We were surprised at how many offers there were on drinks. I ordered 1 cider and he brought 3 and charged $7.50! What a bargain it was after Las Vegas! We stayed out for a few and then headed back to the hotel to grab some food.
Day 189 – 16th May – New Orleans
We set off about 10am towards the Mississippi River to meet the bus for our morning tour. We had booked on a swamp tour which was about 45 minutes away from New Orleans. We arrived at the swamp area and waited for a little bit to board the boat. While we waited we went to have a look at the albino alligator that was in the visitor centre. Apparently there are only about 40 of these left in the world so they are very rare. We boarded the boat at 12 and set off around the swamp area. Not long after we set off, a baby alligator came swimming up towards the boat. Our tour guide and narrator put a stick into the water with a marshmallow on it and the alligator jumped out of the water to eat it. He did this a few times before we went further into the swamp. I’m not sure how nutritious a marshmallow was for a alligator however! We spent about 90 minutes on the water and saw numerous alligators as well as turtles and some birds. We really enjoyed the boat trip. We arrived back into New Orleans about 2:30 and went to grab some late lunch.
In the evening we went down Bourbon Street and went to find some traditional Creole food. I had 3 small plates that were traditional to the area and Dan had steak and chips!
