Uluru & Alice Springs – 29th – 31st January 2019

Day 82 – 29th January – Melbourne to Ayers Rock
We were up and at the airport early for our flight to Uluru / Ayers Rock. The flight was about 3 hours and we arrived about 10:30am. We had to wait to be picked up at the airport until 12:30 for our tour. We had booked a four day tour from Uluru to Alice springs and return.
We met people on the bus and went to our first stop which was the cultural centre. This is also where we got introduced to the flies! I’ve never seen so many flies who were so persistent and wouldn’t leave us alone! We both bought fly nets for our faces in the shop at the cultural centre!
We then walked around the base of Uluru which was pretty incredible although extremely hot! We then drove out to a lookout spot to see the sunset over Uluru and have dinner there. After tidying up after dinner we drove to our final destination of the day which was our campsite! We were shown where we were sleeping which was basically on the floor and put our swags out for the night. A swag is basically a sleeping bag for your sleeping bag. We went to sleep pretty early and watched the stars for a while. I have never been to a place that had so many stars, it was amazing to see.

Day 83 – 30th January – Ayers Rock to Kings Canyon
We were woken at 4am for a sunrise over Ayers Rock / Uluru and then went to The Olgas to do a morning walk. All the walks that were scheduled had to be done before 9am really due to the heat. In the summer months all the walks are closed from 11am or before if the temperature hits 36 degrees. While we were there it was between 38-42 so the earlier we did the walks the better really!
We had lunch back at Ayers Rock resort and then set off on the long drive to Kings Canyon which was our overnight camping spot too. When we arrived Dan and I went for a swim in the pool to cool down and then the entire tour all helped to cook dinner. We had a campfire to cook certain things, although we could have done without the extra heat and a stove inside to cook other things on. I was in charge of the rice and Dan was in charge of the fire! We all sat down on our swags and had dinner around the campfire which was nice. We then had another early night in our swags.

Day 84 – 31st January – Kings Canyon to Alice Springs
We were again woken up at 4am and after breakfast we drove to Kings Canyon. Dan did a canyon walk up ontop of the canyon and I did a shorter lower canyon walk due to blisters! Kings Canyon was vast, technically the biggest gorge in the world it was a fairly challenging walk, but the views were worth it.
After the walk we set off for the long drive to Alice Springs. We stopped off at an emu farm for lunch and this is the central point of Australia as well. We then carried on the journey and arrived into Alice springs about 4:30pm. In the evening we went out with the tour group for dinner and a couple of drinks as it was our last night. Our experience of Alice Springs was that it was a little on the rough side, there was a really drunk man in the bar who tried to start a fight with our tour guide! There were also a lot of police on the streets when we were walking back to the hostel. I’m not sure it’s a place I’d be rushing back to!
