Day 77 – 24th January – Singapore to Melbourne
We checked out of our hostel quite early and headed to the airport for our flight to Melbourne. The flight was about 7 hours and taking into account time differences we landed into Melbourne about 9:30pm. We grabbed our bags and cleared immigration and were met by Will and Tim at the airport. They drove us to Yarraville which is the suburb of Melbourne that they both live in and we went to a pub to catch last orders have a catch up. We then went to Tim’s dads house as that was where we were staying for the next five nights!
Day 78 – 25th January – Melbourne
It was ridiculously hot today and a high of 44 degrees! For some reason we thought it was a good idea to walk into Yarraville town centre to get breakfast! Wow it was hot! It felt like you were being blown with hairdryer constantly!
After breakfast we sheltered from the heat most of the day and Dan went to get a haircut.
In the evening, we had a bbq at Tim’s dads and then were shown the rooftop bar scene in Melbourne! Will and Tim tried to make Dan look cooler and more ‘down with the kids’ and they rolled his trousers up a bit. I’m not sure it worked!
Day 79 – 26th January – Melbourne
Australia Day
We got the train into Melbourne to try and get a local SIM card sorted but failed as he didn’t have our passports with us! We then went to see Dan’s school friend, Jonny, in another suburb. The two of them hadn’t seen each other for about 15 years so it was nice to have a long overdue catch up!
After we left Jonny, we went to meet Will and Tim and their friends in the evening for a couple of drinks in one of the suburbs near where they live. The bars were pretty cool and we had a nice evening chatting to their friends.
Day 80- 27th January – Melbourne
Hottest 100 day
In the morning we went to Will’s house for a bbq breakfast complete with expresso martinis! It was Hottest 100 Day in Australia which is pretty big. It is basically a countdown of the top 100 songs of the year from the radio station triple J. It’s quite a big deal in Australia and we saw loads of places having parties for the occasion. We were in the hands of Will and Tim and we went into Melbourne and sat by the river listening to the countdown and having a few drinks!
Day 81- 28th January – Melbourne
Will picked us and Tim up about 10am and we set off for a drive out along the Great Ocean Road. The drive out was pretty spectacular. We drove through a few pretty towns and stopped at Wye River for lunch. I had a chicken Parma which was a good recommendation from the Ozzy’s! After lunch we set off back via Will’s uncles vineyard to sample a few of the wines! We arrived back into Melbourne late afternoon / early evening and said our goodbyes to Will and Tim as we were flying out to Uluru the next morning. We had a great time in Melbourne. It was nice to see some of the suburbs and ‘real life’ and also brilliant to catch up with Will and Tim again after India. We also massively appreciated them taking the time to shown us around Melbourne and being accommodated by Tim’s dad!
